The link below is to a Youtube video about creating a homemade generator.  The generator used in this video creates enough electrical energy to power a small light bulb.  After coming up with the initial idea, this video provided some insight as to how the project would be carried out.  Though, in the end, this type of generator was not used, eight weeks were spent trying to modify and perfect this.
